V&A gallery at Design Society, Shekou
Located in Shekou, Shenzhen, the Sea World Culture and Arts Center(SWCAC) designed by renowned Japanese architect, Fumihiko Maki was rated top 10 most expected destinations in 2017 by Lonely Planet. The 71,000-square-meter building holds 6 floors, each capable of hosting comprehensive exhibits. The main gallery, also known as the V&A Gallery, is a collaboration between London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (normally referred to as V&A)and the founder of Design Society, China Merchants Shekou. The first overseas gallery of V&A.
V&A is the second largest national museum in the United Kingdom, second only to the British Museum. It is famous for its magnificent collection of arts and crafts, covering a time span from ancient times to contemporary, and a geographic span from Europe, North America, Asia to North Africa.
The opening exhibition themed Values of design was unveiled in December, 2017. The exhibition designed by Sam Jacob Studio was curated for 3 years. Relicase was honored to be nominated main supplier for museum display cases used in this debut.
As chief curator Brendan Cormier referred, “I hope that the exhibition itself will explore and reflect on some fundamental questions about design and material culture in an open and inclusive form. We thought that the best way to do this was through the V&A collection to start a conversation about value and to create a huge appeal for the pavilion.”
The layout of this exhibition was inspired by the plane layout of the traditional cathedral, including the nave and different stands. One can approach each stand to appreciate, or just skip on. In short, the audience does not have to follow a specific route to visit, not limited by space, giving the audience the greatest sense of freedom.
Holding to the concept that the production of showcases should blend into the design of an exhibition, we introduced panoramic glass showcases this time. Opening access were specially designed to cater to unique visual effect. V&A has highest standards in materials, adhesives, and air-tightness. Relicase showcases passed the rigorous tests conducted by V&A, showcasing a master of first-class technology.
